The Example of Paul

When Paul entered Derbe on his first missionary journey (in Acts 14.20), he took these steps to establish a ministry in that
city. He “preached the gospel” (he evangelized the lost, Acts 14.21a), he “taught many” (he discipled the converts, Acts 14.21b), he “(confirmed) the souls of the disciples” (he equipped believers for service, Acts 14.22a), he “(exhorted) them to continue in the faith” (he encouraged the saints, (Acts 14.22b), they “ordained them elders in every church” (they trained and enlisted leaders, Acts 12.23a), and they “(re)commended them to the Lord” (they entrusted the disciples to God, Acts 14.23b).

The first priority in Derbe was evangelism. Conversions require evangelism. Discipleship ministries cannot begin without fruit from evangelism. Since believers exist that “the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea” (Isa 11.9), then evangelism is the heartbeat of God. When God sent His Son to earth, Jesus Christ came as an evangelist.
